Manchester United take on Burnley at Old Trafford in the Premier League later today.

After their embarrassing Carabao Cup exit midweek, Man United will be looking to put things right when they face Burnley in the Premier League.

After failing to win any of their opening two Premier League games, United were shocked in the second round of the Carabao Cup, losing on penalties to League Two side Grimsby Town. Ruben Amorim's side found themselves 2-0 down before scoring late on to send the game to penalties in yet another unconvincing display.

United return to Premier League action later today, though, welcoming newly-promoted Burnley to Old Trafford. After his shaky performance against Grimsby midweek, Andre Onana is likely to be dropped once again, with Altay Bayindir in line to return to United's starting XI.

So, could United pick up three points against Burnley, or could they drop points once again? Let's take a look...

Man United vs Burnley score predicted by simulation

To complete this simulation, we used EA FC 25 and updated the squads with the latest injuries, suspensions, and transfers. The kits from the 2025/26 season aren't available in EA FC 25, so both sides were lined up in last season's kits, while new transfers may have incorrect squad numbers in-game.

We predict that United could set up in a 3-4-2-1 formation, with their line-up as follows: Bayindir; Yoro, De Ligt, Shaw; Dalot, Fernandes, Casemiro, Dorgu; Mbeumo, Cunha; Sesko.

We predict that Burnley could line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation, with their starting XI as follows: Dubravka; Walker, Ekdal, Esteve, Hartman; Ugochukwu, Cullen; Bruun Larsen, Mejbri, Anthony; Foster.

United were slow out of the gates at Old Trafford, but so were Burnley, with neither side registering a shot on target in what was a very dull first half. At half-time, Scott Parker made two changes to his Burnley side, and it worked in their favour as they started to get into some dangerous positions.

As the visitors grew in confidence, it sometimes left them short-changed at the back, allowing United to have a few opportunities of their own on the counterattack. Bryan Mbeumo and substitute Mason Mount both missed big chances, but in the 82nd minute, the deadlock was finally broken.

A strong challenge from Diogo Dalot allowed United to hit their hosts on the break, with Bruno Fernandes leading the attack. He slipped the ball through to Matheus Cunha, and after sizing up his marker, the Brazilian beat the defender with ease before firing a powerful strike into the net.

The 'keeper should've done better with the effort, but United wouldn't care as Amorim's side picked up their first win of the 2025/26 campaign.
