‘Alexander Isak has changed’ - Swedish football icon warns Liverpool over striker

Newcastle United are yet to be given certainty on Alexander Isak’s future.

Swedish football legend Freddie Ljungberg “does not recognise” Alexander Isak from the way he has acted at Newcastle United.

The Toon striker has downed tools all summer to try and force a St James’ Park exit. A no-show in pre-season has bled into the Premier League campaign, with Isak unavailable for the opening games against Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Isak went public last week to claim Newcastle had broken promises over his future. In a damning Instagram post - which was swiftly refuted by the club - the 25-year-old failed to mention Eddie Howe or the Toon supporters.

Eddie Howe gives Alexander Isak update

Speaking after the defeat to Liverpool on Monday, Howe called for “clarity” on the Isak situation. His comments came on a day when a PIF delegation visited the Swede for crunch talks, with chairman Yasir Al-Rumayyan also attending the fixture at St James’ Park.

“The ideal (situation) from everyone is we want clarity,’ Howe said. ‘We want the narrative to change. His (Al-Ruamayyan’s) presence is much appreciated from my perspective. He is the owner, he is the most important person in terms of any decisions we make.”

Freddie Ljungberg on Alexander Isak

Arsenal and Sweden icon Ljungberg has been left surprised by Isak’s conduct in recent months. He told Viaplay: “Something very bad has happened. It’s not a good situation for anyone. Isak is a humble, calm and happy guy. I don’t recognise Isak. Something very bad has happened. He wants to force himself away, it’s a difficult situation.”

“The situation he is in is not perfect and he has not trained with the team. But he is a player who can decide matches and he wants to be part of our squad, the World Cup is important for Alexander Isak.”
