Newcastle sign Oona Sevenius – “Explosive” Euros star joins to bolster WSL bid

Well, they said that Alexander Isak would only be allowed to leave if we signed two strikers. Has that now been achieved after Wor Big German signs and we finally confirm that our Scandinavian sharpshooter arrives on Tyneside…

Err, not quite, but it’s another terrific signing for Wor Lasses as we land another international to boost the squad, and apparently she’s quite a Finnisher!!!

Welcome to The Toon, Oona Sevenius, a fully fledged Finland International striker no less! I think most NUFC Women fans would agree that an area that you can never have too much strike power in, and it’s great to see The Club continuing to add quality to the ranks.

Oona joins the Magpies from Swedish side FC Rosengard having recently represented Finland at the UEFA Women’s Euros.

A stunning strike on the European stage from our newest signing! 🚀

The 21-year-old joined Rosengard from AC Milan in January 25 and went on to make 17 appearances last season, scoring five goals in all competitions. During her time in Italy, she would spend the 2023/24 season on loan at fellow Serie A Women outfit Como.

Oona’s impressive goalscoring record at the beginning of her career with PK-35 Vantaa and HJK Helsinki, scoring 16 times in 23 games for the latter, earned her plaudits as one of Finland’s most promising talents.

On joining Newcastle United Women, Oona said: “I’m really excited, and it’s great to be here. I just can’t wait to get started.

“I have a strong willingness to make a difference, I want to win more than anything, and I’m always working very hard.

“This is a very historic club, a great shirt to wear, and I’m very happy to now have it on. I want to get used to this beautiful city and can’t wait to get the season started because the games are what it’s all about.”

Manager Becky Langley said: “Oona is a brilliant addition to our group. At 21, she has already proven that she is able to perform at a top level and showed that for Finland at the Euros this summer.

“She is an explosive forward with physical presence and she has the ability to link the play under pressure and create in advanced areas. We look forward to working with her.”

Oona was first called up to the Finnish national side on 4th July 2023 and scored a hat-trick in a 4 – 0 win over the Philippines in February 2024. She’s since cemented her place in her National squad and now has netted 6 times in 27 appearances for Finland.
