Do these six words from boss give Gruda hope of a start?

And one six-word sentence in particular might suggest he has a chance of starting against Manchester City.

The Germany under-21 international showed off his fancy footwork in the 6-0 win.

His part in the first goal, when he attracted defenders and then passed to the open man, was textbook No.10 play.

But the sentence which really suggested he could play a part, even start, from Fabian Hurzeler was: “He was intense against the ball.”

That is an attribute the head coach puts highly and one which was not always seen in the 2-0 defeat at Everton.

Matt O’Riley has done some good work in that role but Gruda, given a chance in his preferred position rather than wide, did all he could in the midweek cup tie.

Asked specifically about Gruda, Hurzeler said: “He was very dynamic. He had some great chances. He has something special.

“When you play it fast, he always has some special moments.

“The challenge for him will be to show these things consistently, to not be satisfied with one good performance.

“He gets a lot of love from the fans. The fans like this kind of player, and I also like this kind of player, but it's very important for it to not only be one game, he has to be consistent.

“That's something that we all have to work together on with him to make sure that he can show this in every minute.

“He gets better every game. He has the special things he has and with his ability, the intensity he has in his body, the physicality he has, he has all the things you need to have to play in the Premier League, and he's still a very young player.”

Gruda was clearly unhappy at full-time against Everton after being sent on late.

His frustration might have been increased by the fact he was the most attacking player on the bench.

And that reaction may well be part of the transfer speculation linking him with Stuttgart interest.

Hurzeler appears to rate him highly and says being patient and consistent are his biggest challenges.

He added: “He can have a bright future for us.”

The No.9 and No.10 roles appear to be talking points in terms of team selection to face Manchester City.

There was still a question mark over Georginio Rutter as Hurzeler spoke to reporters on Thursday and Danny Welbeck could get the nod again after his false start on Merseyside.

Jack Hinshelwood would appear to have a chance of starting ahead of Carlos Baleba in midfield based on recent form.

There will also be interest in the make-up of the bench given events in midweek.
