Manchester United may turn to 62-year-old Portuguese tactician Jose Mourinho to replace Ruben Amorim after his Fenerbahce departure.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, Jose Mourinho may seal a shock return to Manchester United in the coming days. The Red Devils are scouring the managerial market for a possible replacement for Ruben Amorim amid mounting speculation on the Portuguese tactician’s future. So, the 62-year-old former Chelsea and Tottenham manager has emerged as a target for Manchester United.
Jose Mourinho has become a shell of the manager he once was, with his latest project ending in only 12 months. While the Setubal native is one of the greatest managers of all time, not just his generation, he has been on a downward spiral in the last half a dozen years.
The 62-year-old rose in prominence during his spell with FC Porto, as he guided the Portuguese giants to a surprise UEFA Champions League triumph. After that, Mourinho experienced success with Chelsea (twice), Inter Milan, Real Madrid, and Manchester United. He also won a European trophy with AS Roma.
However, the Portuguese tactician no longer remains a hot property in the managerial market, particularly after an underwhelming spell with Fenerbahce. That may change soon, as the latest report has linked Mourinho with a surprise return to Manchester United.
Manchester United’s interest in Jose Mourinho is shocking, even though Ruben Amorim faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford. Interestingly, the former Chelsea and Tottenham manager is part of the storied capitulation of the Premier League club’s stature within English football, and he also failed to guide the Red Devils to the elusive Premier League title.
As for Amorim, the former Sporting CP manager has managed only 16 wins in 45 outings thus far with Manchester United. So, it is hardly surprising that widespread reports have linked him with a departure from Old Trafford. Meanwhile, apart from Mourinho, Andoni Iraola and Oliver Glasner have also emerged as managerial targets for Manchester United.
With the list of managerial targets increasing, it will be interesting to see if Amorim can save his job at Manchester United. However, despite the emerging links, it will be surprising to see Mourinho rejoining the Red Devils in the coming weeks.
