Newcastle United sent clearest message yet on Alexander Isak and Liverpool transfer

Alexander Isak could be set for a Newcastle United exit with the final few days set for a Premier League transfer scramble.

The Newcastle United exitdoor is wider today than it has probably been for weeks - and it looks like Liverpool are set to test that.

A bid for the sulky Swede is expected this weekend - and NUFC are ready to field it. In fact, they’ve been trying to facilitate a sale all summer, by chasing the striker recruits that could unlock the player leaving for Anfield. The situation, in short, has largely become untenable.

So we asked Newcastle United fans what they think about it. Do they think it’s been a good window if the Magpies allow Isak to leave? Here’s what they said.

Fans send Alexander Isak Newcastle United transfer message

Michael Walsh: "No rats allowed."

Rob Wood: "Terrible window. We mismanaged it and the cartel took full advantage. We are equally to blame. I feel lied to."

George Birrell Walker: "Isak switched off weeks before end of season."

Kenneth Harvey: "He'll do The bin dippers over as well."

Chris Walkersmith: "Quicker he’s gone the happier the squad and the fans."

Alan Payne: "£150m and a transfer request. Anything less Liverpool and Isak can go do one!!!"

Philip Read: "How many full 90 minutes did he actually complete?"

Eddie Hutchinson: "Refuse Liverpool's next offer and make him put a transfer request in."

Craig Currie: "Ha ha absolutely not. Get Woldermade and another striker in, get 130m for the rat 🐀 and we're laughing 😃."

Michael Johnson: "We get the German striker and Wissa - let him go. With all the other signings it be perfect (window)."

Brian Waite: "He hasn’t gone yet."

Mark Ions: "Keep him 1 more year and every time he refuses to play, fine him 2wk wages and then take £130m next year for him. Would make everyone realise that you don't have player power at our United club."

George O'Hanlon: "No get him out club asap don’t need poison like him around club. Would love for Liverpool not come back in for him. hwtl."

Trevor Milburn: "Whatever happens, keep the petulant child, don't want him getting his way & strengthening the them lot."

Liam Kennedy: Why pragmatism triumphs idealism in Alexander Isak saga

Getting Nick Woltemade in sparks a remarkable mood/narrative shift around NUFC after tough summer. I'm all for it. Taking control is, and always has been, key.

I do still think it’s fair to say NUFC are NOT better off without Isak, in looking at the honest, bigger picture. They are, in many ways, making the very best of bad situation. I do, however, still think he’s a bad egg and a Newcastle must get rid.

It's a nuanced argument. NUFC as a team are not materially losing anything if he goes - he's not there. And it makes sense to maximise sale value on a player who wants nowt to do with NUFC any more. But Isak is still, when not temperamental, the most skilled striker I've ever seen in black and white.

If asked in June if it was a bad window if NUFC lose Isak? I'd have said undoubtedly so. And I still think they're weaker for losing his talents (when applied). But ask me now, and I'd say no. Pragmatism has to come into the assessment - and making the best of it by signing one of the brightest young striker talents around is, when it comes to optics, top class work from NUFC recruitment/hierarchy.

Importantly, though, they are dicing with death if they don't get another one in, mind.
