Alarm bells are ringing at FC Barcelona over the knee injury suffered by star midfielder Gavi in training on Friday.
Initially, it was reported that the issue was nothing serious, but the La Masia graduate was a doubt to play against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday night.
Since then, reports have confirmed that Gavi’s injury is more serious than initially feared, with the youngster sustaining the damage to the same knee that he had injured back in 2023.
As such, he is understood to be ruled out of tomorrow’s game against Rayo Vallecano, while he is also expected to miss out on Spain’s upcoming fixtures against Bulgaria and Turkey.
Too much swelling
Providing an update on the situation, Xavi Hernandez Navarro of ARA reports that Gavi has a very inflamed joint, and for this reason, it is recommended that tests be carried out once the hematoma has subsided.
It is estimated that on Sunday or Monday, the exact extent of the injury will be known, meaning Barcelona will have to wait for a day or two in order to learn the severity of the problem.

The report confirms that the problems are in the same knee that Gavi seriously injured two years ago – the right knee – and specifically in the meniscus area.
As such, it will keep him away from Rayo Vallecano vs Barcelona for the time being and also from being called up for the Spanish national team.
Gavi had been in fine touch during the pre-season and was pushing for a starting berth, even though he had to settle for minutes off the bench in Barça’s first two games of the season against Mallorca and Levante.
Hansi Flick & co. will be hoping that the problem is not too serious and does not rule out the energetic midfielder for an extended period.
