Kobbie Mainoo faces an uncertain future at Manchester United after making his transfer intentions clear

Newcastle United are believed to be plotting a late summer move for unsettled Manchester United prospect Kobbie Mainoo.

ManchesterWorld understand that Mainoo is open to leaving Old Trafford in the final few days of the summer transfer window after falling down the pecking order under manager Ruben Amorim. These reports have also been backed up by both Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein, who both have cited Mainoo’s situation as one to potentially keep an eye out for in the closing stages of the summer window.

Mainoo played the full 90 minutes during United’s shock Carabao Cup exit to fourth-tier side Grimsby Town and was arguably one of his team’s slightly more productive players on a shambolic evening as he contributed an assist for goalscorer Bryan Mbeumo at Blundell Park. However, he’s still yet to feature in the Premier League this season despite the team’s winless start to the campaign, with captain Bruno Fernandes often playing in a much deeper midfield role than last season alongside veteran Casemiro.

Mainoo is also unlikely to feature in one of the two No.10 roles due to the presence of summer signings Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo along with Mason Mount, who has been given a run of games in recent weeks since returning to full fitness.

Newcastle United join the race for Kobbie Mainoo

Football Insider reporter Peter O’Rourke claims Newcastle United are one of the suitors for Kobbie Mainoo if the Red Devils are to sanction a move for the youngster.

He posted on X: “Newcastle United are in for Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo and are exploring a potential deal. Player is open to leaving if he is not going to be playing regularly at Old Trafford this season.”

Meanwhile, Everton News, claims former Red Devils boss David Moyes is also interested in the England international as he aims to lead the Toffees to an exciting first season at the Hill Dickinson after already landing the likes of Jack Grealish and Thierno Barry. Earlier reports this week had also linked Mainoo with a move to United’s long-standing rivals Leeds. Although that deal seems unlikely at this stage.

Fabrizio Romano, however, states that Mainoo is only looking to leave United on loan as opposed to pushing for a permanent exit. He played a key role in helping England reach the final of Euro 2024 but has not yet made the Three Lions squad under Thomas Tuchel and is yet to represent his country since Lee Carlsey’s first interim game in charge against Republic of Ireland in July 2024.

What does the future hold for Kobbie Mainoo?

Kobbie Mainoo won universal praise from pundits when he emerged as a first team regular for Erik ten Hag’s side towards the end of the 2023/24 season. While he was still very raw, it was clear he was performing at a superior level to many of his teammates at that point in time, which had many United fans hugely excited at just how far he could go in the game.

Mainoo netted the winner in the 2024 FA Cup final and was subsequently added to the England squad by Gareth Southgate. He played regularly at Euro 2024 as the Three Lions finished runners-up but has seen his career stagnate over the last 13 months, particularly under Ruben Amorim where he’s struggled for form, fitness, minutes and consistency.

Amorim at this stage admits he’s keen to see the youngster stay at Old Trafford. He explained this week: ‘I want Kobbie to stay. He needs to fight for his place, and we need Kobbie. So that is not going to change. The rest I don’t know how it’s going to finish.I understand that the players that are not playing in this moment are disappointed, but everyone has the same opportunity to play. You have to fight during the week.”
