"My idea"- Amorim makes major Man Utd admission as possible'escape route'emerges

Under-fire Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has confessed that he does not know if he will still be in charge of the Red Devils after the international break as one of his former clubs reportedly plan to offer him an escape route.

The Portuguese has hit low ebb after low ebb as Man United boss, suffering potentially his biggest managerial humiliation yet against Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Amorim oversaw an embarrassing penalty-shootout defeat to the League Two side in the second round, where Man United had to come from two goals down just to force a 12-yard battle, in which Bryan Mbeumo missed the decisive penalty.

Amorim's position is now seen as increasingly untenable in the wake of that fateful night, which also extended Man United's winless start to the season to three matches after defeat to Arsenal and a draw with Fulham in the top flight.

The 40-year-old even suggested that he could walk away from his position after the EFL Cup embarrassment, but he cut a more level-headed figure in his pre-Burnley press conference on Friday and will at least remain in charge for the visit of the Clarets.

Amorim offers no guarantees over Man United future

Amorim is still under contract at Old Trafford until the end of the 2026-27 campaign, but when asked if he expected to be in charge after the September hiatus, the Portuguese was not in a position to deliver an affirmative answer.

"I don't know what is going to happen, but that is my idea," Amorim replied. "But again, I'm not going to promise you nothing about what is going to be the future. But I'm the manager of Manchester United and I think that is not going to change."

Prior to Amorim's latest comments, reports claimed that the Portuguese was expected to be sacked by the Red Devils, who have identified two highly-rated Premier League managers as potential replacements for the former Sporting Lisbon head coach.

Amorim has masterminded just 17 wins from 45 matches in charge of the 20-time English champions across all competitions, including a measly seven victories from 29 games in the Premier League, where he has suffered 15 losses.

Man United have avoided defeat in their last 23 Premier League games versus newly-promoted clubs, although the last time they suffered such a loss - a 4-1 beating vs. Watford in 2021 - Ole Gunnar Solskjaer departed immediately afterwards.

Amorim to be offered Man Utd escape route by former club?

Whether Amorim walks, is sacked or plans to stick around at the Theatre of Dreams for a little while longer, the 40-year-old could allegedly fall into a safety net offered by one of his former clubs.

According to The Times, Benfica - whom Amorim represented as a player from 2008 to 2017 - may offer him a chance to return as head coach, if Joao Noronha Lopes wins the club's presidential election in October.

Lopes is supposedly eager to bring Amorim back to the Estadio da Luz, but he kept his cards close to his chest when asked by Record about his interest, responding: "He’s an excellent coach, under contract with Manchester United. I won’t destabilise Benfica. They have a very important match ahead of them."

Benfica are currently under the wing of former Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Bruno Lage, who has enjoyed a brilliant start to the season with six wins and one draw from seven matches in all competitions.

Lage led Benfica to the Champions League league phase through qualifying, and his side are yet to concede a single goal this season, but his contract expires at the end of the season.
