With transfer deadline day edging closer, Joe Gomez is being linked with a move away from the club.
Due to his poor injury record, Joe Gomez hasn’t been a first choice for many years, but that hasn’t stopped him being the subject of transfer interest from a club in need of defensive reinforcements.
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that AC Milan are actively exploring defensive additions before the end of the summer transfer window, with Liverpool’s Joe Gomez among the names on their shortlist.
The Serie A giants were exploring a move for Manchester City’s Manuel Akanji but with the Swiss international reluctant to move clubs, AC Milan have now shifted their focus to alternative targets.
Alongside Joe Gomez, Villareal’s Juan Foyth’s name is mentioned by Di Marzio, as the Rossoneri eye a late potential deal.
From a Liverpool perspective, a sale at this stage is risky.
Jarell Quansah’s departure from the club this summer was a permanent one and with Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kostas Tsimikas also exiting, Joe Gomez has become a reliable squad option for Arne Slot.
His versatility to play anywhere across the backline makes him invaluable if he can stay fit.
If Liverpool cannot secure a deal for Marc Guehi this summer, a move away for Joe Gomez is unlikely.
Liverpool did secure the signing of Giovanni Leoni this summer, but he is only 18-years-of-age, and as a whole if Liverpool were to let Gomez go, the defensive department would be a lot shallower than it was last year.
AC Milan’s interest in Joe Gomez is understandable, and stems from his reputation as a versatile defender who can play in every defensive position.
He is a player who has the experience of winning the biggest trophies in football and has the pace and composure that would adjust well to a league like Serie A.
But, a sale makes little sense at this stage given the depth of Liverpool’s defence if a deal for Marc Guehi cannot be agreed.
