Chelsea are managing Cole Palmer’s fitness to prevent his groin problem from getting any worse, according to Stephen Smith.
The injury expert says that the Blues’ medical staff are being cautious, and his withdrawal from the match against West Ham suggests that they don’t want to take any chances:
“It is an ongoing thing with Palmer, they appear to be managing. The fact he was able to go out and warm up [before the West Ham game] and felt it there, I think what you are seeing there is a very conservative and mature approach to managing a very valuable asset.”
“We know all the staff at Chelsea are absolutely world class, so what you are seeing there is the strength in their beliefs and processes come to the fore. I wouldn’t be too concerned, I imagine he is being very well looked after.”
Palmer is not expected to play against Fulham
Reports earlier this week suggested that the 23-year-old will not participate in Chelsea’s next Premier League fixture and he is unlikely to be called up for England duty either.

We will get a better idea of when Palmer could make his comeback when Enzo Maresca holds his pre-match conference later on Friday, but the feeling is that he should return to full fitness immediately after the international break.
Chelsea need to find a backup option
Joao Pedro played in Palmer’s position against the Hammers last week, and he is set to start there once again this weekend. However, the Brazilian was signed to play as a striker or on the left wing.
With Christopher Nkunku expected to complete his move to AC Milan soon, a replacement is needed. The club had identified RB Leipzig’s Xavi Simons as their top target but he has joined Tottenham instead. A move for Barcelona’s Fermin Lopez could now be explored.
