There's no doubt that making the initial 53-man roster is a feat worth recognition, especially if you were an undrafted rookie or on the fringe throughout training camp. But as wide receiver Austin Trammell attested, that's just the beginning of the journey.
Less than a day after Trammell got the nod, he was released to make room for Tim Patrick, who landed in Jacksonville via trade. The silver lining is that he just got re-signed to the practice squad.
And that's the thing, teams would like to keep certain players, but they have a finite amount of roster spots. That's where the practice squad comes in handy. More often than not, these players may need to work on their craft before they can get playing time. Other times, they may provide depth in case the injury bug strikes.
Regardless of the reason, these three Jaguars practice squad players will find a way to see the field in 2025.
Ja'Quinden Jackson, Jaguars running back
You won't see the Jaguars roster being mentioned among the best ones in the league, but they most definitely have a handful of strengths ahead of the regular season. One of them is running back. Travis Etienne is back despite the trade speculation in the offseason, and Tank Bigsby should also get plenty of playing time in 2025.
Add Bhayshul Tuten and LeQuint Allen to the mix, and the Jacksonville backfield is stacked. That's mostly great news for a team that wants to establish the run, but that made it nearly impossible for Ja'Quinden Jackson to get a roster spot. The silver lining is that he managed to land in the practice squad and will likely be promoted if any of the other Jaguars running backs miss time with injuries (or if Etienne is traded).
Cam'Ron Silmon-Craig
Safety isn't among those positions that will be a strength for the Jags in 2025, but the cupboard isn't bare either. The Jaguars have four starters in Andrew Wingard, Darnell Savage, Antonio Johnson, and Eric Murray. On the other hand, Rayuan Lane will also play a key role on special teams.
This is a long-winded way to say that Jacksonville has a well-rounded safety group, but if injuries were to hit, or if one of them gets traded, the team's brass won't hesitate to add Cam'Ron Silmon-Craig to the active roster.
Silmon-Craig signed as an undrafted free agent with the Jags. He was a long shot to make the team, so nobody batted an eye when he got the boot on cutdown day. That said, Jacksonville liked him enough to bring him back to the practice squad, and with Caleb Ransaw missing the whole year, you can bet the former Colorado Buffalo will get elevated on game day.
Keni-H Lovely, Jaguars cornerback
The Jaguars have plenty of talent at cornerback with Jarrian Jones, Jourdan Lewis, Tyson Campbell, and Travis Hunter in the fold. But Montaric Brown missed the preseason and may not be ready for the regular season. That leaves Jacksonville without much depth at the position.
Sure, Christian Braswell is a fine reserve, especially when you take into account that he can contribute on special teams. That said, the Jags could use reinforcements at some point of the year. That's where Keni-H Lovely comes in.
Lovely spent the 2024 preseason with the Buffalo Bills and later logged onto the Arizona Cardinals. Along the way, he suited up for the Michigan Panthers of the United Football League. The Western Michigan product signed with the Jags in the preseason and made an impact right off the bat, registering an interception against the New Orleans Saints.
Given that the Jaguars are thin at cornerback, don't be surprised if Lovely gets a call.
