Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback loses in college football head coach debut

Former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Michael Vick and Norfolk State lost in his college football head coaching debut. The Spartans lost 27-7 to Towson in their opener.

Towson jumped out to an early 13-0 lead as the Spartans were held scoreless in the first half. They added their touchdown in the fourth quarter, but not before Towson added two more touchdowns of their own.

Norfolk State went 4-8 last season, so it was a complete turnover for Vick and his staff. Former Steelers linebacker Terrence Garvin is Vick’s defensive coordinator.

Garvin, 34, was the defensive coordinator at Florida Memorial, an NAIA school in Miami Gardens. He first joined that staff in 2022 as the linebackers coach.

Vick’s coaching experience was as an advisor to with the Atlanta Legends in 2019, but the quarterback is a legend at Virginia Tech and was electric with the Atlanta Falcons and Philadelphia Eagles.

Vick has never coached at the collegiate level. In Hampton Roads, Vick has long been supported by the local community, and the school contacted him for an interview. That is how he landed the job and now hopes to use the energy to rebuild the program.

He played as a backup quarterback for the Steelers in 2015 and then retired afterward. The 44-year-old Vick will use his quarterback experience in football to lead the Norfolk State program during the rebuild.
