Sheffield United respond after reports claim Gustavo Hamer is heading to Leeds United

Sheffield United player Gustavo Hamer could become the centre of a transfer battle ahead of deadline day, with Leeds United interested.

Gustavo Hamer was the standout player in the Championship last season. The Dutchman won the Player of the Season award for the entire division after scoring 10 and assisting eight more in 44 Championship appearances.

But after the Blades lost the Championship play-off final, it looked as though Hamer was bound to leave Bramall Lane this summer, and one team who have long liked the 28-year-old are Leeds United.

Last summer, Leeds United made a bid to sign Hamer which was swiftly rejected. And going into this summer’s transfer window, Hamer’s links to Elland Road were reignited and have persisted right up until the finish point of this summer’s transfer window.

Gustavo Hamer to Leeds United rumours played down

On Friday, unofficial rumours surfaced on social media claiming that Hamer was on his way to Leeds United. But The Star have played down those rumours, insisting that Hamer would be involved in his side’s Championship clash against Middlesbrough on Saturday lunchtime.

He was, and it seemed as though Sheffield United made a point of Hamer being in the team posting multiple pictures of the player before the game, in what might have been a message to clubs like Leeds United following the rumours on Friday.

Leeds United handed potential lifeline in Gustavo Hamer transfer race

Although Hamer has remained at Sheffield United so far, and although it seems he has so far been unwilling to move to Leeds United, the possibility of him leaving the club before the September 1st transfer deadline hasn’t been completely ruled out as of yet.

Then on Friday, soon after those online rumours emerged, it was claimed by FourFourTwo that Hamer could actually leave Sheffield United on loan before the transfer window shuts, with an obligation to buy.

It is understood that the Blades could let Hamer leave on a temporary deal with an obligation worth between £15m and £20m to buy the Dutchman next summer. Whether that would work for Leeds United remains to be seen.

Likewise, whether or not Daniel Farke still wants another midfield player after signing the likes of Anton Stach and Sean Longstaff remains to be seen, though it looks as though Leeds are focusing on more attacking-minded players in what’s left of the transfer window, and so a late move for Hamer cannot be ruled out.
