Marco Silva was left ‘seething’ on the touchline at Stamford Bridge after Fulham saw a goal disallowed against Chelsea.
Fulham were denied an opening goal against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime due to a controversial VAR decision that went in favour of the hosts.
The Cottagers made the very short trip across west London to take on Enzo Maresca’s side looking for their first win of the Premier League season. Fulham had picked up draws against Brighton and Manchester United in the opening weeks.
Chelsea meanwhile welcomed the visitors buoyed by the 5-1 thrashing of West Ham at the London Stadium last week. Enzo Maresca’s men went into the clash as favourites but found themselves 1-0 down after 21 minutes.
VAR disallows Fulham goal v Chelsea
Fulham youngster Josh King showed composure to fire past Robert Sanchez in the Chelsea goal after his side won the ball on the edge of their own box and turned defence into attack in three passes. However, referee Rob Jones was sent to the monitor and eventually disallowed the goal for a coming together between Rodrigo Muniz and Trevoh Chalobah in the run-up.
A statement from the Premier League Match Centre read: “After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to Fulham.
“Referee announcement: ‘After review, Fulham number nine commits a careless challenge, stands on the foot of the Chelsea defender, therefore we disallow the goal and we restart with a Chelsea free kick. There would be no further action’.”
That decision left Fulham boss Marco Silva ‘seething’ on the touchline according to BBC Sport, with reporter Nizaar Kinsella writing: “Fulham manager Marco Silva is often angry at officials but this time he seems on another level. That baffling decision by referee Robert Jones has punished Rodrigo Muniz for good target man play and cost Fulham a wonderful goal.
“The supporters are also raging chanting: "you don't know what you're doing" at the officials. Interestingly, this is the third time in three matches VAR have ruled out a goal in Chelsea's favour but it is the first one which has done so in such controversial fashion.”
Ex Premier League defender slams ‘ridiculous’ decision
Former Premier League defender Curtis Davies also slammed the VAR decision. The 40-year-old, who played for Aston Villa and Hull City in the top flight, said: “I'm fuming and I'm a defender and usually I'm on the side of the defender.
“Trevor Chalobah has gone for a tackle that was never in his favour. Rodrigo Muniz takes the ball and accidentally steps on his foot. I don't know how that's a foul, never mind taking off the goal. It's ridiculous.”
