'I can't accept that' - Disallowed Fulham goal at Chelsea sparks widespread fury

England legend Stuart Pearce led the outcry on talkSPORT after Fulham had a goal controversially ruled out against Chelsea.

Fulham teenager Josh King thought he opened the scoring at Stamford Bridge, calmly finishing off a stunning breakaway move inside the opening 22 minutes.

However, referee Rob Jones was quickly sent to the monitor by Michael Salisbury, the video assistant referee, to review a possible foul in the build-up.

Cottagers striker Rodrigo Muniz got away from Trevoh Chalobah with a pirouette and stepped on the Blues defender's foot in the process.

After a few replays of the incident, Jones then turned to announce his decision to the fans inside Stamford Bridge.

He explained: “After review, Fulham No.9 commits a careless challenge, stands on the foot of the Chelsea defender, therefore we disallow the goal and we restart with a Chelsea free kick.

"There would be no further action.”

It sparked a furious reaction from Fulham manager Marco Silva on the touchline after the foul and at half time.

Silva waited for Jones to exit the pitch to vent his anger, moments after Chelsea had taken the lead through Joao Pedro.

talkSPORT understands the PGMOL have told Premier League clubs they will be operating with a high bar for 'clear and obvious' errors this season.

And in this instance, the officials overturned the referee's call, feeling that the on-field decision was a 'clear and obvious' error.

The higher bar was expected to mean fewer disallowed goals for minor infringements - but there has been an overwhelming opposition to the decision from football fans online.

It was something that left Pearce raging too as he spoke on commentary for talkSPORT at Stamford Bridge.

Pearce said: "For me, that is ludicrous. I can't accept that.

"And if that is the baseline for which we're going to rule goals out, you won't see many goals in the Premier League this season."

Ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has also commented on the decision to disallow the Fulham goal.

He wrote on X: "VAR has had a shocking start to the season."

Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand also wrote: "VAR killing this young man’s moment…"

Pedro piles on misery

Chelsea thought they had gone 1-0 down after 22 minutes, with King brilliantly scoring the opener.

However, they survived thanks to the controversial VAR decision and ended up taking the lead themselves.

Pedro brilliantly headed in from a corner in the final seconds of the first half, deep into stoppage time, which was built up due to the check for the foul that denied Fulham's goal at the other end.

The Brazilian has now scored five goals in five starts for Chelsea.

Cottagers boss Silva came back out from half time early to sit in the dugout and re-find some composure.

His side now have to come back from behind to get something out of the game against their London rivals.
