The Seattle Seahawks struck gold in the draft plenty with John Schneider and Pete Carroll running the show. There is, perhaps, no unit that rings more true than in the secondary where the duo drafted Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Earl Thomas and Byron Maxwell, who formed the Legion of Boom and helped lead the franchise to their first Super Bowl title.
They appeared to once again find a mid-round gem in 2017 when they drafted Shaquill Griffin in the third round. He spent the first four seasons of his career in Seattle, recording 249 total tackles, 203 solo tackles, nine tackles for loss, 1.0 sacks, one quarterback hit, six interceptions, and 48 passes defended -- earning his lone Pro Bowl selection in 2019.
Following the 2020 season, Griffin joined the Jacksonville Jaguars on a three-year, $44.5 million contract that included $29 million in guaranteed money. His four years away from Seattle have not produced the same success as he recorded 158 total tackles, 121 solo tackles, four tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, three interceptions, one forced fumble, and 22 passes defended.
Seattle Seahawks add CB Shaquill Griffin to practice squad
Griffin has played for four teams (the Jaguars, Houston Texans, Carolina Panthers, and Minnesota Vikings) in that span. After somewhat of a resurgence with the Vikings in 2024, he came back to where it all started, signing a one-year, $3 million contract with the Seahawks that includes $1.75 million in guaranteed money.
He was shockingly released on Tuesday and not named to Seattle's practice squad the following day. That changed on Thursday, however, as Griffin was reportedly added to the practice squad.
Schneider spoke with the media on Wednesday, hinting that Griffin will likely wind up on the practice squad. One day later, Brady Henderson of ESPN confirmed that he was indeed on the practice squad, "The Seahawks re-signed CB Shaquill Griffin to their practice squad, the team announced. DT Anthony Campbell was released to make room."

Griffin figures to have a path to playing time despite being on the practice squad. Outside of the tandem of Devon Witherspoon and Riq Woolen, Josh Jobe, Nehemiah Pritchett, and Deion Kendrick are the only true cornerbacks on Seattle's roster.
Meanwhile, Griffin was actually quite solid in 2024. His 64.3 PFF grade ranked 90th out of 222 cornerbacks, while his 71.3 run grade ranked 46th and his 62.4 coverage grade ranked 94th.
