Chelsea have been sent a strong message over the future of Barcelona star Fermin Lopez.

Although Chelsea are closing in on Brighton star Facundo Buonanotte, they continue to be linked with the Spain international attacker, who could provide yet more depth to the attacking corps of Enzo Maresca’s side.

The transfer has turned into something of a tug-of-war with the player left in the middle. Although Barcelona want to retain him, there is a sense that a €50 million transfer fee would be too good to reject.

As such, it appears that Fermin will have the final say over his future.

Ahead of Sunday’s La Liga clash with Rayo Vallecano, Barca boss Hansi Flick has sent the Blues a strong hands-off message.

“For now, he's here. I've spoken with him, and I think he'll stay. I'll be very happy when the transfer window closes,” the former Bayern Munich boss said.

“His heart is at Barcelona, he’s at home here.”

Flick was pushed on the club’s stance. Barca have notably refused to rule out a deal.

“I don't know. I'm focused on the team, I'm not interested in the financial situation. My focus is on the team, and we have a fantastic squad. Everyone knows I'd like to keep those who are here. You can ask other people,” he added.

Fabrizio Romano on the Fermin Lopez state of play

Speaking on YouTube on Friday night, transfer insider Fabrizio Romano admitted that even Chelsea and Barcelona are unsure what Fermin’s plans are with little over of 48 hours of the transfer window remaining.

“There’s been many conflicting reports about Fermin Lopez. So what’s the status?” he said.

“From what I understand, Chelsea have spoken to the agents of Fermin Lopez – even after signing Buonanotte. There’s been direct contact to try and understand the situation. Everyone’s trying to work out what the player wants to decide. Barcelona believe Fermin will not go but Chelsea are still talking to his agents.

“There’s nothing agreed with Barcelona, so we’re all waiting for the player, including the two clubs. Let’s see if this becomes a real negotiation.”

For Fermin Lopez, then, anything is still possible.
