CCFC’s managerial team Big Ron & WGS
On this day (30th August) in 1995 were about to play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in their fourth match of their Premier League season under manager ‘Big’ Ron Atkinson (a CCFPA member now). They had lost 3-0 at Newcastle United in their opener then beaten Manchester City at Highfield Road in midweek and achieved a goalless home draw the following Saturday againt Arsenal. Today Big Ron’s men got another draw sharing four goals against another London outfit, Glen Hoddle‘s Blues.
Isaias in Sky Blue away kit
Chelsea roared into an early two goal lead, future Sky Blue Dennis Wise notching one after 6 minutes and Mark Hughes doubled their score five minutes later set up classily by the London side’s exciting new signing Ruud Gullit. City rose to the tough challenge inspired by John Salako fighting back with a goal just before the break from our Brazilian ace Isaias and then gaining the equaliser after 54 minutes with a Peter Ndlovu special (all three are now CCFPA members) . It was a gripping game before a crowd of 22718 and the draw was a fair result.

Noel in the Sky Blue
A goal from (now CCFPA member) Noel Whelan just before half time secured a valuable win against Chelsea at Highfield Road in the February return match. Our opponents went on to finish mid table in 11th place in the Premier League.
Thanks to a four match unbeaten run all with clean sheets (two wins two draws) the Sky Blues scraped home in the Premier League with safety uncertain until the ref’s end of game whistle in their final game (at Highfield Road) a goalless draw with Leeds United. Bottom club Bolton Wandereers were nine points clear of safety and also relegated Queens Park Rangers were four points better off. Three clubs including CCFC finished on 38 points with Manchester City finishing the wrong side of the line and relegated and 17th placed Southampton also safe with the 16th place Sky Blues.
