Antony saga takes another twist as Manchester United and Betis clash over details - Manchester United

Manchester United forward Antony’s move to Real Betis has stalled with the two clubs seemingly at odds over finer details. After reports of a £25m agreement started to surface, Betis released a shock statement saying there was no agreement and that their offer had been withdrawn.

ESPN has reported that United accepted the offer, but that Betis withdrew it citing concerns about Antony’s wages. Antony enjoyed a successful loan spell with the La Liga side last season, and was granted permission to discuss personal terms over a return.

It seems the deal is now at a standstill, and the player will likely have to take a pay cut. Another scenario could see United pay a lump sum to the player to compensate for lower wages.

Betis hinted at this possibility, including in their statement; “we can’t afford the fee and the amounts that Manchester United must instead pay the player before the transfer.”

With the transfer window closing on Monday, talks will have to reopen between the clubs in the next 48 hours if an agreement is to be reached.

United and Betis at odd over Antony

Antony is looking to put an end to a difficult three-year spell at Old Trafford. He became United’s second most expensive signing after Paul Pogba, when joined from Ajax in a £86m deal in 2022.

He struggled to make an impact under former boss Erik ten Hag though, eventually falling down the pecking order. He impressed on loan at Betis last season, scoring nine goals in 26 games after joining in January.

He played a big part in Betis’ run to the Europa Conference League final, though the Spanish side were beaten comfortably by Chelsea. He returned to United this summer, but was omitted from the squad for their preseason tour of the U.S.

He has also been ordered to train away from the senior squad as part of the “bomb squad” alongside Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Tyrell Malacia, and at one point Marcus Rashford.
