49ers potential trade target Jeff Wilson

The Miami Dolphins caught the injury bug hard in the 2025 preseason. In the running back room in particular, star ball carrier De’Von Achane’s status is up in the air as far as his Week 1 health is concerned.

Additionally, it was announced yesterday that back-up running back Jaylen Wright would miss significant time after a leg injury sustained earlier in the week turned out to be worse than the team initially thought.

“The Dolphins are now planning on backup Jaylen Wright being out for multiple weeks after having a small procedure done on his lower leg,” wrote CBS Sports’ Brayan DeArdo. “Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel said that the hope is that Wright can be back sometime in September.”

With Achane nursing a calf, Wright undergoing surgery, and veteran back Alexander Mattison already out for the season, the Phins backfield was down to one healthy participant: rookie Ollie Gordon.

Gordon is a six-foot-one bruiser with plenty of speed to break one, he was drafted in the sixth-round to be a Ying to Achane’s Yang and now looks to be the unbridled RB2 heading into his first career NFL game.

Resign Jeff Wilson Jr.

With only two healthy back on roster, the Phins made a smart move in going out and signing a back that is already familiar with their system in Jeff Wilson Jr.

Wilson is an NFL mainstay, entering his ninth season in the league, and at just nine-years-old there’s no reason to believe he cant still contribute to an NFL roster.

“Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that they are going to sign Jeff Wilson to their practice squad. Wilson was released after a brief return to the 49ers this summer,” wrote Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper. “Wilson played for the Niners from 2018 until he was traded to the Dolphins in 2022. He ran 141 times for 637 yards and three touchdowns in 27 games for the team.”

Wilson was a player that head coach Mike McDaniel himself sought to acquire back in his first year in South Beach. He made an effort to bring in players he had coached in San Francisco that would make the shift to his system more seamless.

After the team struck gold with Texas A&M speedster, De’Von Achane, Wilson’s talents were no longer needed.

Ja’Mycal Hasty Also Signed

The team also picked up some help in the form of former New England Patriots’ running back Ja’Mycal Hasty.

Hasty has bounced around teams in the NFL, first getting his start with, you guessed it, Mike McDaniel’s San Francisco 49ers. He played two seasons there before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars for a spill.

He finally arrived in New England where he was primarily a special teams contributor and occasional passing down piece.

If elevated, Hasty will likely be buried deep in this running back room. Wilson may actually garner some carries, Hasty is unlikely to do so.
