Manchester United were denied a penalty in the first-half of their Premier League clash at Burnley. Ruben Amorim's men looked to respond to their midweek humiliation at Grimsby Town by earning their first win of the season.

The Reds started well at Old Trafford in response to three games without victory. Early on, Mason Mount thought he had won a penalty when he was brought down inside the penalty area from Kyle Walker.

Mount closed Walker down inside the Burnley half and forced a foot race towards goal. Both players seemed to grapple with each other as they made their way inside the penalty area before the United star went down.

Referee Samuel Barrott pointed to the spot immediately but video assistant referee (VAR) checked the footage and the decision was overturned. The decision was explained by the Premier League on their official Match Centre account on X.

"After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of penalty to Manchester United," they wrote. "Referee announcement: 'After review, Burnley number two does not commit a foul on Man United number seven. My final decision is no penalty and drop ball to the goalkeeper.'"

United made their pressure pay shortly after and opened the scoring through a Liam Cullen own goal. Bruno Fernandes' free-kick delivery was met by Casemiro inside the box and his header rebounded off the crossbar and onto Cullen.

Martin Dubravka looked like he had managed to claw the ball out but Barrott awarded the goal. It means that United's first two league goals have both been own goals this season.
