Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim came under fire after his use of a magnetic tactics board during his side's shock Carabao Cup exit at Grimsby on Wednesday night and the League Two club has added to his discomfort with a cheeky social media post.

Amorim was captured moving pieces around on a board as he considered his options as his side came up short in a penalty shoot out.

The United boss hinted after the match that he has ‘considered quitting’ as United boss, but he insisted his comments were born out of the emotion of his side’s defeat.

Amorim said afterwards “something has to change” at Old Trafford and that the players’ performance “spoke really loud”.

Speculation swirled around Amorim’s comments, but the United boss – speaking ahead of Saturday’s home match with Burnley – insisted his responses boiled down to emotion.

“Every time in the future we have one defeat like that I’m going to be like that, I’m going to say sometimes I hate my players, sometimes I love my players, sometimes I defend my players,” Amorim said.

“This is my way of doing things and I’m going to be like that. And I felt that in that moment, I was so frustrated and annoyed.

“Sometimes I want to quit, sometimes I want to be here for 20 years. Sometimes I love to be with my players, sometimes I don’t want to be with them. I need to improve on that, it’s going to be hard but now I’m focused on the next game.”

Amorim may not appreciate the video posted on Grimsby Town’s social media accounts, with a club official moving pieces around on a magnetic board while sitting in the seat Amorim occupied for his side’s cup humiliation.

The video was used to announce Grimsby’s team for their League Two game against Bristol Rovers and it proved to be a big success, with over three million views in it’s first two hours on X.
