Manchester United have been handed a new penalty verdict by former Premier League referee Mike Dean. Ruben Amorim's side made a very bright start against Burnley at Old Trafford - and thought they had a chance to take the lead from 12 yards after Rob Jones pointed to the spot.
The penalty incident involved Mason Mount and Kyle Walker - with the former appearing to foul the United star. However, replays showed that Mount may have initiated contact and thus the initial decision was overturned, as confirmed by the Premier League Match Centre on X.
"#MUNBUR - 16' VAR OVERTURN After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of penalty to Manchester United," their update read. "Referee announcement: "After review, Burnley number two does not commit a foul on Man United number seven. My final decision is no penalty, and drop ball to the goalkeeper."
There was quite a lot of confusion regarding the decision inside the Sky Sports studio with Dean - who reviews controversial decisions - offering his verdict.
"He's given an attacking free-kick," he began. "When he makes initial contact he's about a foot outside of the area, so I think it might be overturned and given a free-kick outside [the penalty area]. The actual contact is on the back of his calf and it's outside the area.
"If it's outside it's factual [so it should be overturned]. It's in or out. So for me it's a free-kick for United from outside the area, in my opinion.
"The initial contact was outside and then he's fallen inside. I don't know if they're looking at a foul the other way or something, I don't know why they're taking so long.
"I've frozen it, it's just outside if it is outside they won't have to go to the screen. It's factual, in or out. Just overturn the decision."
Despite Dean's protestations, Jones did go over to the pitch-side monitor and confirmed that not even a free-kick would be awarded as he deemed that Walker did not foul Mount. In among the action, United lost Matheus Cunha to injury in a chaotic first half.
