Five things learned as Manchester United beat Burnley 3-2

Manchester United recorded their first win of the season against Burnley at Old Trafford.

After picking up just one point from their first two games of the season, Manchester United secured their first set of three points this season following a 3-2 win over Burnley in the Premier League.

United dominated the first-half and deserved to go in at half-time with a 1-0 lead following an own goal from Josh Cullen. The goal came after Casemiro headed Bruno Fernandes’ free kick off the crossbar, only for the ball to bounce off Cullen before crossing the line.

Burnley reacted instantly after the break, scoring an equaliser through Lyle Foster 10 minutes into the second half, but their joy was short-lived as Bryan Mbeumo converted Diogo Dalot’s low cross.

The spotlight was on Altay Bayindir again as United’s goalkeeper struggled to deal with another corner before Jaidon Anthony made it 2-2.

United were awarded a penalty in stoppage time when Amad Diallo was pulled down inside the box. That led to Fernandes scoring from the spot to seal the three points for United.

Man Utd fans are behind Ruben Amorim

The Old Trafford faithful were in fine voice throughout the game, with the Stretford End making their feelings known on under-fire head coach Ruben Amorim.

‘Ruben Amorim, he’ll bring the glory days again…’ was heard on multiple occasions, just days after United crashed out of the Carabao Cup second round after losing to League Two side Grimsby Town on penalties.

The media might be turning on Amorim, but the match-going fans are rallying behind their head coach.

Matheus Cunha injury fears

United were handed an injury blow after Matheus Cunha, who had started the game brightly, was forced off during the first half.

The Brazil international led the line for United as Amorim left his strikers on the bench, but his evening was cut short in the 31st minute due to an apparent hamstring injury.

Cunha had been called up to the Brazil national team squad for the upcoming international break, but he must wait for a diagnosis of his injury to learn how long he will be in the treatment room.

Amorim will hope that Cunha’s injury isn’t serious.

Bryan Mbeumo scores his first Premier League goal for Man Utd

In what was Mbeumo’s best performance in a United shirt, the Cameroon international scored his first league goal for the club to make it 2-1.

Mbeumo caused Burnley problems throughout the game, using his lightning pace to get in behind Burnley’s defence.

Bryan Mbeumo has scored 21 Premier League goals since the start of last season. Only Mo Salah (29), Alexander Isak (23) and Erling Haaland (22) have more in that timeframe.

Cunha’s injury means United will be relying on Mbeumo to replicate his performance against Burnley after the international break.

Amorim doesn’t think Benjamin Sesko is ready to start in the Premier League

It came as a shock that new signing Benjamin Sesko wasn’t in the starting line-up.

Amorim opted for a striker-less XI for the third consecutive match, and it’s a hint that he doesn’t feel Sesko is ready to be starting league games.

Sesko started for United during the week as they lost to Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup, but he was limited to a substitute cameo this evening, coming on in the 71st minute.

Sloppy defending will prove costly

Both of Burnley’s goals came as United struggled to deal with high balls into the box.

Luke Shaw and Dalot were caught napping for the first goal, while Bayindir didn’t cover himself in glory for Anthony’s goal.

It should have been a comfortable win for United, but lapses in concentration meant the Red Devils made hard work of their 3-2 win over Burnley.

Amorim must address this as well as the goalkeeping situation.
