Ruben Amorim cuts stressful figure as VAR and Bruno Fernandes rescue Man United

Ruben Amorim cut a stressful figure as Manchester United sealed a last-gasp 3-2 win over Burnley.

The Red Devils were on the verge of extending their winless streak this season following a shocking Carabao Cup exit to Grimsby Town on Wednesday.

But Amorim's men were given the chance to wrap up three points from the spot after VAR decided Burnley defender Jaidon Anthony had held on to Amad Diallo's shirt for too long.

Although Clarets goalkeeper Martin Dubravka guessed the correct way and dove to his right, Fernandes slotted his penalty into the bottom corner.

As an evidently ecstatic Fernandes wheeled away in celebration, replays of Amorim prior to the penalty were displayed.

How did Amorim react to Fernandes' penalty?

Given the pressure riding on the result, Amorim looked as if he'd rather be anywhere other than in the Old Trafford dugout.

Although he rested his feet on the brick facade, Amorim glanced up to the heavens before Fernandes rescued what may be a career-saving win.

It's been no secret Amorim hasn't exactly enjoyed whenever his side have had to take a penalty.

During United's midweek defeat on penalties to Grimsby, Amorim was pictured looking a bundle of nerves and stared down at the ground throughout the shootout.

It was the same story in United's 1-1 draw against Fulham, as Amorim couldn't look up when Fernandes skied his penalty high into the stands at Craven Cottage.

Thankfully for the Old Trafford faithful, Fernandes' penalty has now given United's season lift-off.

United slipped to a 1-0 defeat in their season opener against Arsenal before the Fulham result last Saturday.

It looked as if the wait for a first win was set to continue up until Fernandes' 97th-minute winner.

How United avoided a third consecutive winless result

The Red Devils had taken the lead in the 27th minute via an own goal from Burnley's Josh Cullen.

Casemiro rose to power a header off a Fernandes cross onto the crossbar, only for the ball to smack Cullen and fly towards goal.

Dubravka managed to keep the ball from the back of the net, but he did not get there in time to stop it from going over the line.

United's chances of victory were dealt a major blow shortly after the opener when Matheus Cunha was forced off with an injury and was replaced by Joshua Zirkzee.

Mason Mount, who thought he'd won a penalty in the first half only for it to be overruled by VAR, was also another injury casualty as he departed at half-time.

The Clarets found an equaliser in the 55th minute through Lyle Foster, only for Bryan Mbeumo to fire United back in the lead two minutes later.

Yet the travelling Burnley supporters were sent into raptures once more when Anthony bundled the ball over the line following an error from United goalkeeper Altay Bayindir.

But Fernandes ensured it would only be the Red Devils supporters in full voice upon the final whistle with his penalty.
