Liverpool attacker signs unforeseen contract extension after Newcastle feats

Liverpool have announced a new contract for one of their in-form attackers who played a critical role in their dramatic Premier League win over Newcastle United on Monday night.

The Reds maintained their perfect start to the top-flight season with an unforgettable 3-2 victory over the Magpiesat St James' Park, where 17-year-old Rio Ngumoha came up with a sensational winner in stoppage time.

Ngumoha produced a delightful first-time finish from Mohamed Salah's cross after a delightful Dominik Szoboszlai dummy, as Liverpool avoided the embarrassment of a potential collapse against 10 men.

Prior to the teenager's memorable moment, though, Cody Gakpo teed up Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike for Liverpool's first two goals of the night, as the Dutchman continued his terrific start to the season under compatriot Arne Slot.

Gakpo was also on target for the Reds in their opening 4-2 win over Bournemouth, and the 26-year-old has now signed a new long-term agreement with the English champions, who have not specified the length of his extension.

Speaking to liverpoolfc.com after signing his new deal, Gakpo - who was already under contract until the summer of 2028 - said: "It feels amazing to extend the contract here at this beautiful club. I’m very grateful and hopefully I can give back many more beautiful moments.

"I feel at home, my family feels at home and that’s also a big decision always. They feel good. I’m very happy at the club, a good group, good teammates, so the life around the football itself is very good and I enjoy every moment of it. I’m very grateful that I can extend.

"Trying to win more things with the club [is my aim], with the team. I think we have a very good squad at the moment and we’re trying to build on something special again. Obviously last season we won the league, so we have to defend it with the best of our capabilities.

"We want to also win the Champions League and the other cups, so that’s what we are going for. For me personally, I think I’d like to keep on developing, so every year has to be a better year than the year before. That’s what we’re aiming for."

Gakpo joined the Reds midway through the 2022-23 season - snubbing interest from Manchester United to link up with Jurgen Klopp - and the 26-year-old has produced 42 goals and 19 assists in 131 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions since.

The arrival of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen sparked inevitable debate about how Slot would line up his attacking quartet this season, as the £116m man can function as either a number 10 or on the left wing, drifting infield to create or finish chances.

The German has been deployed centrally for the Reds so far, allowing Gakpo to effectively strut his stuff on the left-hand side, although the latter may now be fearing for his place in the side for the imminent visit of Arsenal.

Slot can finally start Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch together again following their disrupted starts to the campaign, meaning that Szoboszlai would either start at right-back or in the number 10 role if he is to keep his place in the side.

Szoboszlai operating as the number 10 would push Wirtz out to the left, and even though he is yet to hit his stride, Liverpool's record signing should not be dropped for a game of this magnitude.

However, there is every chance that Mac Allister will start on the bench, allowing Szoboszlai and Gravenberch to act as the double pivot, Wirtz to play in the number 10 role and the in-form Gakpo to continue on the left-hand side.
