Signed as an undrafted free agent by the Seattle Seahawks in 1980 out of Milton College, Krieg overcame long odds to become a reliable starter, stepping in during his second season and earning the nickname “Mudbone” for his gritty play.

Over 12 seasons with the Seahawks, he set franchise records for passing yards, touchdowns and completions, leading the team to its first playoff appearance in 1983 with 2,139 passing yards and 18 touchdowns. His peak came in 1984, when he threw for 32 touchdowns and 3,671 yards, guiding Seattle to a 12-4 record and earning his [first Pro Bowl selection](https://www.pro-football-reference.com/years/1984/probowl.htm).

Krieg orchestrated numerous comebacks, including seven game-winning drives in 1988, earning two more Pro Bowls (1988, 1989) and helping the Seahawks reach the playoffs four times during his tenure.

After leaving Seattle, Krieg bounced around as a veteran backup and spot-starter for the Kansas City Chiefs (1992-1993), Detroit Lions (1994-1995), Arizona Cardinals (1996), Chicago Bears (1997) and Tennessee Oilers (1998), adding depth to playoff contenders like the Chiefs.

Krieg’s career totals include 38,147 passing yards, 261 touchdowns, and 199 interceptions across 213 games, ranking him in the top 10 all-time in several categories at retirement. He consistently ranked among the league’s top passers in the 1980s.

Krieg’s standout attributes were his exceptional resilience and pocket presence, allowing him to absorb hits and deliver under pressure despite modest athleticism. He possessed a strong, accurate arm capable of threading tight windows.

While plagued by turnovers early on, his perseverance turned middling teams into contenders, earning him induction into the Seahawks Ring of Honor in 2004.
