Chelsea will kickstart gameweek 2 of the Premier League against West Ham on Friday night. It’s bound to be an exciting derby between the London rivals following a busy transfer window for both clubs.
West Ham against Chelsea: Head-to-Head record
Chelsea are currently on a 3-game winning streak against West Ham. Chelsea won both their fixtures against the Irons last season. The first fixture ended with a 0-3 win for the Blues, and the second with a 2-1 win. The Hammers have not had a win against Chelsea for exactly 2 years now. Their last win came on the 20th of August 2023 with a 3-1 win at the London Stadium.
During the previous 30 clashes where West Ham was the home team, the Blues won 13 times, drew 5 times, and lost 12 times. Furthermore, during the previous 60 clashes, Chelsea won 33 times, drew 10 times and lost 17 times, with a goal difference of 58 to 106 in their favour.
Recent form
Chelsea are coming to the game off a goalless draw against Crystal Palace, at home. Meanwhile, lost their first game of the season to the newly promoted Sunderland in a match that ended 0-3.
West Ham has had 2 wins, 1 draw, and 2 losses in their previous 5 fixtures, although 4 of them were pre-season friendlies. Chelsea’s last 5 fixtures include 4 wins and 1 draw. Unlike West Ham, these results include a Club World Cup semi-final and final, both of which Chelsea won.
West Ham is currently on a 6-game winless streak at home. This, combined with the fact that Chelsea is on a 3-game winning streak against them, will be a point of concern for the Irons.
Predicted lineups
West Ham
New signing Mads Hermansen will start in goal for the Irons. His defence is predicted to consist of Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Jean-Claire Todibo, who recently made his move to West Ham permanent, Max Kilman, Nayef Aguerd, and El Diouf. The Irons’ midfield will mostly include the Free-kick wizard, James Ward-Prowse, and the Argentine, Guido Rodriguez. The Irons will be missing attacking midfielder Mohammed Kudus as the Ghanaian will now play for Spurs. However, they will be strengthened by the return of Lucas Paqueta from his spot-fixing-related ban. In attack, we’ll be seeing the ever reliable Jarrod Bowen alongside the striker, Fullkrug.
The irons will be without Luis Guilherme and Summerville due to injury, while Edson Alvarez may not feature as the midfielder is close to signing for Fenerbahce. Tomas Soucek and Callum Wilson will look to come on from the bench
Lineup: Hermansen; Wan-Bissaka, Todibo, Kilman, Aguerd, El Diouf; Ward-Prowse, Rodriguez; Paqueta, Bowen, Fullkrug.
Chelsea
The away side will be missing key centre-backs as Badiashile and Levi Colwill are out due to injury. Romeo Lavia will also not feature due to injury, while Mykhailo Mudryk is out with a doping ban. However, the good news is that Tosin Adarabioyo and Wesley Fofana have returned from injury and will likely be on the bench. Nicolas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku will not feature as they’ve been told to find a new club.
The Blues will be lining up with Robert Sanchez in goal. Maresca will likely start Acheampong and Trevoh Chalobah as his centre-back pairing, with Tosin and Fofana on the bench. His full-backs, Reece James and Marc Cucurella, are set in stone to start. The world-class midfield duo of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo will start as the pivots, while the impressive Andrey Santos will look to come on from the bench. The four players in attack are likely to be the teenage sensation Estevao Willian, star player Cole Plamer, Pedro Neto, and new signing Joao Pedro.
🚨 Maresca hints at rotation between Pedro – Delap depending on the game plan :
“Joao probably in the small space gives us more than Liam. Liam probably gives us a bit more in terms of physicality and runs in behind. It depends on the game plan we have”

Lineup: Robert Sanchez; Reece James, Acheampong, Chalobah, Cucurella; Enzo, Caicedo; Palmer, Estevao, Neto, Joao Pedro.
Author’s prediction
Chelsea should look to win comfortably. West Ham have not had a good start to the season. Besides, their record under Graham Potter has been woeful, to say the least. The Blues will look to prove their strength tonight after an underwhelming performance against Crystal Palace to start their season.
The author predicts: Estevao, Caicedo, and Palmer will lead Chelsea to a 3-0 win.
