Man Utd are in the market for a defensive midfielder after a failed approach for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba

Manchester United are believed to be considering a late summer swoop for Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga.

The Red Devils finished in their lowest ever position in the Premier League last season and have already blown one of their routes into Europe this season by falling short on penalties against League Two side Grimsby Town in the Carabao Cup. Pressure is piling on Ruben Amorim to build momentum at Old Trafford after nearly 10 months in the dugout and some sections of the fanbase are beginning to question whether he’ll be able to get the team to perform to the standards required in his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation.

One of the main areas of concern for United is thought to be in the middle of the park. The club had been linked with a blockbuster move for Brighton’s Carlos Baleba but are thought to have cooled their interest after learning of the Seagulls’ staggering £115m asking price.

Why Man Utd are interested in Eduardo Camavinga

Camavinga has helped Los Blancos win two league titles, two Copa del Rey trophies, the Spanish Super Cup on two occasions as well as most notably two Champions League finals. The former Rennes star started in the 2024 win over Borussia Dortmund and featured as a substitute in the triumph over Liverpool two years earlier.

He’s blessed with excellent speed, stamina, tackling qualities and the tactical intelligence to dictate the battle in midfield.Camavinga has been a huge part of Real Madrid’s success story but was limited to just 19 league appearances last year due to various hamstring issues and is not guaranteed to be a first team regular under Xabi Alonso this term.

The 2022 World Cup finalist is thought to be available for the right price which has alerted United as they look for a midfielder with the ability to slot seamlessly into what Amorim is trying to do at Old Trafford.

How much could Eduardo Camavinga cost?

Newcastle United are reportedly ready to test the water with a bid of €40m (£34m) to try and sign Eduardo Camavinga. The Magpies already have a strong midfield featuring Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Jacob Ramsey among others but are keen to add squad depth ahead of a challenging Champions League campaign.

Madrid are unlikely to accept that offer, according to Fichajes, with the outlet stating that Xabi Alonso’s side are seeking a figure in excess of €70m (£60m). The Red Devils are thought to be weighing up an offer of their own after cashing in on Alejandro Garnacho, with Antony possibly following him out of the door.
