Newcastle United player ratings vs Leeds as 8/10 stars show their quality but William Osula…

Newcastle United got their second point of the season but were held to a goalless draw against Leeds United at Elland Road.

After a heartbreaking defeat to Liverpool on Monday night, the Magpies needed to get a result against newly-promoted Leeds on the road.

Eddie Howe put out a Newcastle United side with several changes. William Osula came in for the suspended Anthony Gordon, while Jacob Murphy was favoured over Anthony Elanga.

The game itself was a bit like the weather in Yorkshire on Saturday evening, dull and drab. With neither side having any clear-cut opportunities to break the deadlock.

Newcastle’s new signing Nick Woltemade was watching on from the stands, but how did the players perform on the road?

Nick Pope – 6

An interesting tactic to stop a Leeds attack by heading the ball from Dan James’ hands to earn himself a yellow card, but he stayed calm whenever he was tested.

Distribution is still an issue for the Englishman.

Kieran Trippier – 6

A quiet performance for the 34-year-old, but a decent one at that.

Kieran Trippier played more like a wing-back at Elland Road and was able to find space on several occasions against Gabriel Gudmundsson. However, his crossing needs to be much, much better going forward.

Fabian Schar – 7

Given the all clear after his head injury against Liverpool. Fabian Schar kept things clean and tidy as he usually does at the back.

Sven Botman – 8

A first Premier League appearance of the season for the Dutchman, and he did not waste any time getting stuck in. It is such a shame Sven Botman has been missing from the first team for so long, because he is an absolute joy to watch in defence.

Interceptions, clearances, blocks, Botman did the lot. Came off shortly after the hour mark after going down hurt.

Dan Burn – 8

A classic performance from the big man, who has just been called up to Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for a third consecutive time.

Dan Burn found himself a busy defender against Leeds, but managed to thwart any attacks without much issue.

Tino Livramento – 8

What a footballer Tino Livramento is. The young defender, playing as a winger against Leeds, was a consistent pain for Leeds’ back line and found himself breaking away down the left on several occasions.

Performed just as well when he returned to right-back.

Sandro Tonali – 7

The Italian was playing through the pain after his shoulder problem on Monday. It looked as though Sandro Tonali had no pain whatsoever, as he got stuck in and commanded his midfield like it was an army mission.

Passing was barely an issue, and he had no fear getting himself up the pitch.

Bruno Guimaraes – 6

Failed to win any of his aerial duels in the first half, but his passing was brilliant. Bruno Guimaraes put in a heroic performance against Liverpool on Saturday, but it was much more muted against Leeds.

The Brazilian, who was missing fellow countryman Joelinton for the game, did get himself more involved in the second half, helping build up the attacks.

Jacob Murphy – 6

Favoured to Elanga, who was dropped for tactical reasons, Murphy left a lot to be desired in his first Premier League start of the season.

Against a team like Leeds, who prefer to sit deep, Newcastle could have done with starting Elanga, who would have had more joy taking on the defenders.

William Osula – 5.5

His first Premier League start since joining the Magpies a year ago, but the Dane did very little to impress after being given a huge opportunity.

Osula just lacked that clinical edge and felt a second late to the impressive crosses into the area. There is definitely a player in there, but it is clear why Woltemade was signed, because he is not currently a player who can lead the line for a team playing at the top end of the Premier League this season.

Jacob Ramsey – 7

A very sharp full debut for the 24-year-old. He had a fierce Sean Longstaff to fend off, a job that proved to be very tricky, but he managed it well throughout.

Taken off at half-time for Lewis Miley, a shame considering his bright half.

Substitutes

Lewis Miley – 7

Came on for the second half and kept Longstaff quiet.

Lewis Hall – 6

Defended well and managed an effort from range, which sailed over the crossbar.

Anthony Elanga – 6.5

Another bright performance from the £55m man, who tried to make something of the game by using his pace and dribbling ability.

Harvey Barnes – 6

A quiet showing on the left-hand side.
