Leeds United player ratings as Lukas Nmecha and Calvert-Lewin catch eye vs Newcastle

Leeds United earned a deserved goalless draw with Newcastle United to increase their table tally to four points after three games.

The hosts more than matches their bulky opponents, with Lukas Nmecha playing the 'big man' role to type, bringing the ball down and using his muscle. He helped Leeds get up the pitch, though - again - that flair in the final third was lacking.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Jack Harrison injected some life when they came on. The hosts limited Newcastle to long shots, and were the most likely to score, though found it difficult to get into the box themselves over the span of the match.

All in all a fair result. Here are how the players rated.

**LUCAS PERRI**

Distribution with his feet is severely lacking, with a number of giveaways. Is more accurate with his hands than his feet. But made some decent stops. **7**

**JAYDEN BOGLE**

Newcastle exploited his high positioning a few times. Took attacking frustration into his own hands with a mazy run but failed to pass when needed. Grew into the game once he got used to what was going on. Kept his wingers quiet after half time. **8**

**JOE RODON**

Muscled William Osula in duels and looked more alert in the box than last weekend. Just needs to watch his shoulder against the quicker strikers. **7**

**PASCAL STRUIJK**

Many meaty headers away and a few good tackles too. Was worked more when Anthony Elanga came on but dealt with it fine. Keeping Jaka Bijol out right now. Needs to tighten up his passing, though. **8**

**GABRIEL GUDMUNDSSON**

Got lucky in the first half when inexplicably leaving a ball in the box before the shot hit him to save a possible goal. Calm when under pressure. Went off with injury. **7**

**SEAN LONGSTAFF**

Some great challenges and great retention, albeit sometimes too negatively. Also a bit slow to release the ball. But got himself in the right areas and was the best midfielder overall. Faded towards the end. **8**

**ILIA GRUEV**

Did OK on the ball, with some neat passes. Won a few balls back, but also gave a number away. Farke had hands on head at one point. **6**

**ANTON STACH**

Lost the ball a few times in promising areas. Still getting used to the pace of the Premier League. Advanced forward without much fruit. **6**

**DANIEL JAMES**

Looks more like himself with his harrying and attacking venture. Kept Newcastle on their toes and put in a few crosses. **7**

**LUKAS NMECHA**

Battled heartily from the long goal kicks and ran well off the ball when he was successful in the aerial duel. Did his fair share of defending too. **8**

**WILFRIED GNONTO**

Darted about. Crosses were mixed in success but none led to anything substantial. He was fine without doing anything extraordinary. Need to do more at this level. **6**

### SUBS

**JAMES JUSTIN (on 80' for Gudmundsson)**

Did what was needed at left-back. Handled Elanga well. **7**

**BRENDEN AARONSON (on 60' for James)**

Stopped a cross and was almost put in by Harrison. Showed nice feet in the area late on but that was it. **6**

**JACK HARRISON (on 60' for Gnonto)**

Worked hard and diligently. Got a big cheer when charging down a pass and playing a cross to Calvert-Lewin. Very promising showing. Growing in confidence with each outing. **7**

**DOMINIC CALVERT-LEWIN (on 70' for Nmecha)**

Used his height a few times and showed fight. Was always an option. Once he is fully fit - and stays fit - he will be a very useful asset. **7**
