Peter Schmeichel says one Man Utd star'stepped up'for Ruben Amorim vs Burnley,'Immense...'

After a miserable fortnight, Manchester United finally picked up a win, beating Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford.

Manchester United never do things the easy way, and on Saturday, this was no different, leaving it until the 97th minute to finally secure the winner against the Clarets.

It was a dramatic afternoon, but in the end, Ruben Amorim will have left Old Trafford with a half-smile, knowing this is just step one in his road to redemption. United won the game over Burnley 3-2, but the performance from the home side could easily have led to four goals or more.

Bryan Mbeumo was phenomenal for United and scored his second of the season in as many games, quickly emerging as a star player for Amorim.

Elsewhere, Kobbie Mainoo was promising in midfield, showcasing why he is capable of playing in the more defensive role within the midfield pair.

However, for Peter Schmeichel, one player in particular stood up to be counted for United.

Peter Schmeichel praises Bruno Fernandes for stepping up vs Burnley

Mbeumo might have been the top performer, but once again, it was Bruno Fernandes who made the difference for United, scoring the winning penalty at a huge moment for the club.

It is always Fernandes who saves United, and after this occasion, Schmeichel has praised the ‘Portuguese magnifico’ for saving the day.

Speaking to Premier League productions after the game, Schmeichel gave his review of the game, praising Fernandes for scoring in a high-intensity situation.

“At the moment, it’s really, really difficult to be a Man Utd fan. Mistakes again, not taking their own chances, but today this fella here [Fernandes] stepped up in immense pressure and scored.

“They got the opportunity and converted, and oh my god, to win this game 3-2 – they could’ve lost easily. That’s how the game panned out in the second half. The manager said they have to win; nothing else will do. They got the three points.”

Bruno Fernandes back at his very best for Manchester United

The 2025/26 season has started disappointingly by Fernandes’ own usually excellent standards. Last week, Fernandes was very poor against Fulham, missing a penalty and looking all over the place.

However, after struggling against Fulham in the midfield, Fernandes was back at his best for United against Burnley, as his stats from SofaScore demonstrate.

Fernandes was at his creative best, making six key passes in the game, with one in particular an excellent long ball in behind for Mbeumo, which the Cameroon international should have done better with.

In a midfield that wasn’t stretched and constantly playing catch-up, Fernandes was able to do what he does best, with the pairing with Mainoo particularly exciting.

Fernandes is on a mission to save the club, and his emotions post-game prove what this means to him.
