Glen Powell's "magical" new series unveils trailer

Chad Powers, the upcoming sports comedy starring Glen Powell, has unveiled its first trailer.

The Hulu series, which has been co-created by Powell and Michael Waldron, sees the actor play Russ Holliday, an American football player whose career is torched after he makes an "unforgivable" mistake (via Disney).

Wishing to resurrect his dreams, Russ disguises himself and becomes the titular character, a "talented oddball" who gets a break at a struggling team; the question is, can he keep his identity a secret?

Primed to be released next month, the clip showcases Russ's own "Mrs Doubtfire" journey as designs an elaborate wig and new face, with his hokey accent being based on the "Westest" part of West Virginia.

The supporting cast for the series includes Steve Zahn, Toby Huss, Perry Mattfeld, Wynn Everett, Frankie A Rodriguez, Clayne Crawford and Colton Ryan. In addition to his acting and co-creating role, Powell also serves as an executive producer.

While the total episode count is yet to be specified, Disney did confirm that the first two parts would be released via Disney+ on 30 September, with further 30-minute instalments dropping weekly.

While the nature of the series looks broadly familiar, its origin comes from a more peculiar source, with the show being based on a sketch - with the same basic premise - that was performed by former American football player Eli Manning.

The comedy sketch, which took place in 2022, saw the quarterback attend try-outs for Penn State University while disguised, with the incident being filmed as part of a project for sports broadcaster ESPN.

Powell, who has also appeared in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone But You, spoke about the real-life incident during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, saying: "What made Eli’s thing so magical is the viewer knew Eli Manning was under [the disguise].

"So, let’s use the lie at the centre of this thing, which creates inherent fun conflict over the course of the series. We were like, 'OK, we’re going to Tootsie this thing. Let’s Mrs Doubtfire it, and let’s see how far we can take this lie.'"

Chad Powers premieres on Disney+ on 30 September.
