Man United Women edge Hammarby to reach Women’s Champions League third qualifying round

Manchester United Women beat Swedish side Hammarby 1-0 on Saturday evening to qualify for the UEFA Women’s Champions League third qualifying round.

Hammarby started the game strongly and created the first chance when Cathinka Tandberg fired an effort over the crossbar. Tandberg then set up Ellen Wangerheim, who forced goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce to make a save.

United eventually settled into the game, and goalkeeper Melina Loeck nearly gifted them the first goal when Ella Toone’s corner caught her out before Anna Sandberg’s sky-rocketed her shot over.

Hammarby carved out the best chance of the first half on the half-hour mark. Astayo Miyagawa’s header bounced into the ground, allowing Sofia Reidy to unleash a shot which crashed off the bar.

Moments later, Maya Le Tissier did well to block the shot of former Manchester City striker Julie Blakstad from hitting the target.

Toone created the last chance of the first half, teeing up Julia Zigiotti Olme, whose tame effort was calmly saved by Loeck.

Man United started the second half brightly, creating two chances in quick succession. Celin Bizet Donnum’s effort was denied from going in by Hammerby’s goalkeeper, and Melvine Malard could not convert the rebound.

The Manchester outfit eventually found the breakthrough just after the hour mark with a beautiful team play. Bizet crossed to Malard at the back post, and the France international cut the ball back to Terland, who put the ball home.

Hammarby pressed hard for the equaliser but could not create any clear-cut chance as United held on to their one-goal advantage.

The Red Devils could face Atletico Madrid, Austria Vienna, Brann, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hacken, Paris FC, Real Madrid, Roma or Sporting Club in the next qualification round.
