Manchester United star Matheus Cunha has withdrawn from Brazil’s World Cup qualifiers after suffering an injury against Burnley on Saturday.
The Brazil national team posted on X: “Flamengo’s attacker Samuel Lino was called up this Saturday (30) by coach Carlo Ancelotti.
“After a conversation between the medical departments of Manchester United and the National Team, attacker Mateus Cunha was released from the call-up due to the muscle injury suffered in the match against Burnley, in the Premier League.”
Cunha was given the task to spearhead United’s attack in their 3-2 victory over the Clarets.
He felt something in his leg while chasing the ball in the 30th minute and immediately called for medical help after going to the ground.
It was a concerning sight for manager Ruben Amorim and the club supporters as it was a non-contact injury.
The 26-year-old was immediately taken off, with Joshua Zirkzee replacing him.
Cunha has enjoyed a lively start to his life at Manchester after completing his transfer from Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier this summer.
He came close to scoring a goal in the opening clash against Arsenal and struck the woodwork in United’s clash with Fulham.
The former Atletico Madrid ace played 90 minutes again in midweek when his side travelled to face Grimsby Town.
He missed a crucial spot-kick in the penalty shootout, which ultimately led to United’s elimination from the tournament.
The extent of his injury is not yet known, but an update could be expected within the next 24–48 hours.
United fans will hope Cunha can make a swift recovery, with Manchester City and Chelsea awaiting after the international break.
