Matthijs de Ligt reveals‘biggest positive’from Man Utd’s 3-2 win vs Burnley, Ruben Amorim wants something else

Matthijs de Ligt has revealed positives to take from United’s 3-2 win over Burnley, while Ruben Amorim believes his side should have won in a different way.

Rúben Amorim picked up his first win of the season as Bruno Fernandes struck a stoppage-time penalty to hand Manchester United a dramatic 3-2 victory over Burnley on Saturday.

United started brightly, with Bryan Mbeumo threatening twice and multiple penalty appeals waved away before Josh Cullen’s own goal broke the deadlock just before the half-hour. An injury to Matheus Cunha forced an early substitution, with Joshua Zirkzee introduced, but the hosts couldn’t add to their advantage before the break.

Burnley drew level early in the second half through Lyle Foster, only for Mbeumo to restore United’s lead straight from the restart. The visitors struck back again with 25 minutes to play, Jaidon Anthony making it 2-2.

With the game heading for a draw, Amad was fouled deep into stoppage time, and Fernandes kept his composure from the spot to secure United’s first three points of the campaign and Amorim’s maiden victory in charge.

Matthijs de Ligt on United’s win

In the opening three games of the Premier League season so far, Matthijs de Ligt has gotten the nod over Harry Maguire to start as the central centre-back, and that trust in him has certainly paid off.

On the opening day of the season, he kept Viktor Gyökeres quiet and put in another impressive display as they drew away to Fulham.

Speaking to MUTV after the game, the 26-year-old spoke about what positives could be taken from their 3-2 victory.

“I think the fact that we came after their first goal, we immediately scored 2-1, and after 2-2, we still believed to score 3-2 is the biggest positive of today,” the Dutchman said. “But we all know getting away with that today is not every week, so we really need to improve on that.”

Amorim’s opinion on the game

After United’s shock exit to Grimsby in the second round of the Carabao Cup, there was always going to be one acceptable outcome against Burnley: a win.

While it wasn’t as straightforward as it should have been, United managed to pick up their first three points of the season.

Speaking to Sky after the game, Amorim spoke on how United shouldn’t have had to rely on a last-minute winner, saying: “For me, I look at the game and we should have won in a different way. We should not suffer…”

🎙️ | Ruben Amorim:

"Three points. If you look at the game, we should solve the game in the first-half and then control the game but it is never easy. We have to fight until the last minute, we overcomplicated things. But for me, the most important thing is we tried."

Manchester United had several opportunities to score in the first half and should have been out of sight going into the second half, despite Amad missing an open net and Mbeumo having several chances.
