Anfield is set to host a blockbuster clash on Sunday as reigning Premier League champions Liverpool welcome last season’s runners-up Arsenal in a match already being billed as an early title decider.

Arne Slot’s Liverpool enter the contest with back-to-back wins over Bournemouth and Newcastle United, though their performances have exposed defensive shortcomings. A hard-fought victory at St James’ Park reignited calls for defensive reinforcements. In attack, summer signing Hugo Ekitike has impressed, scoring in both opening fixtures to underline his growing importance to the Reds.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have started the season in imperious form, scoring six goals without reply in their first two matches. Mikel Arteta’s side secured a gritty 1-0 victory at Manchester United on opening day, courtesy of Riccardo Calafiori’s well-taken header, before dismantling Leeds United 5-0 at the Emirates, with Viktor Gyokeres netting twice on his home debut.

However, the comprehensive win over Leeds came at a cost. Captain Martin Odegaard and winger Bukayo Saka were both forced off with injuries, sparking concern ahead of the trip to Anfield. While Saka has been ruled out for up to four weeks with a hamstring problem, Arsenal were handed a timely boost on Saturday as Odegaard travelled with the squad despite his recent shoulder injury.

Odegaard was withdrawn in the first half against Leeds after landing awkwardly following a challenge, but subsequent scans showed no lasting damage.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Arteta remained cautious: “We don’t know yet. He hasn’t trained, and if he does, it will be tomorrow. He’s doing everything he can, and we’re doing everything we can to make him available, but we will have to wait and see.”

The Norwegian playmaker’s potential availability will be a significant lift for the Gunners, who are already grappling with a growing injury list. Kai Havertz is sidelined after undergoing minor knee surgery, while Ben White and Christian Norgaard face late fitness tests. Long-term absentee Gabriel Jesus also remains out.

Arteta may turn to new £67.5 million signing Eberechi Eze for his debut, while teenage prodigies Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman are also in contention to step up if required. Norway’s decision to include Odegaard in their upcoming international fixtures against Finland and Moldova adds to the optimism that he could feature at Anfield.
