Evansville ‘League of Legends’ fantasy football kicks off

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - With the NFL regular season kicking off in less than a week, people are making sure they’ve got their fantasy football drafts complete.

You hear all the time about crazy fantasy football punishments or crazier draft parties.

But right here in Evansville, one leagues stakes were even higher, to make sure they got the best pick in the draft.

The League of Legends added a series of physical challenges to determine their draft order this year.

“Half of us are overweight, half of us wish that we could be something great or was something great one day, so I just figured if someone was gonna pull a hammy, let’s just come out here and have the longest throw, route running, 40 yard dash after you chug a gatorade,” organizer Corey Mills says.

Mills says he’s been doing fantasy football for a few years.

“Every time I’m in a group, we talk about doing something, talk about making it fun for just the draft order, even throughout the league,” Mills says. “So, I decided to come up with a few events to make our draft order by point system.”

Mills says while he knows most of the men in the league already, he’s excited to get to know some new people too.

“I know a lot of them, but there’s some guys I still haven’t even met so can’t wait to shake their hand and thank them for joining this league,” he says. “I envision it being bigger next year, having multiple different teams in the league and eventually maybe city-wide and just spreading it throughout the whole country.”

Some of the league members say they’re satisfied, and surprised with how they did in the Epic Draft Olympics.

“It’s pretty wild but we’re having fun, and we’re excited for next year,” member Taylor Boyd says.

Well, best of luck to the men in this fantasy football league, because the first place winner will get $450 dollars and an engraved trophy.

If they come in last place, Mills says have to wear a shirt that says “I suck at fantasy football” and stand in the mall for hours.
