Cam Newton can't seem to stop himself from oddly criticizing Eagles' Jalen Hurts

During ESPN's First Take live show at Norfolk State, Cam Newton had a bit to say about Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

“I have to remind you, Nick Foles also won a Super Bowl,” Newton stated when discussing the legacy of Hurts and how the parameters have changed regarding the optics of Hurts' status among the hierarchy of quarterbacks in the NFL.

Another shot taken of Hurts from Newton

Newton claimed his comments were not meant in jest; however, he did make it clear that he is no longer judging Hurts as a "good" quarterback but now looking at him as a "great" or "elite" quarterback moving up the ladder. Newton did mention that the Eagles' ability to retain and add talent doesn't help Hurts in his evaluation.

With Saquon Barkley, A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and the rest of his talented supporting cast, his evaluation of Hurts doesn't favor him. While Hurts has never been asked to "shoulder the load", is it fair to criticize Hurts from a negative aspect that the Philadelphia front office did their job effectively and loaded up on talent?

Maybe Newton's comments come from a place of jealousy. During Newton's MVP and Super Bowl run, he was the second leading rusher on his team, along with Greg Olsen (a tight end), being his number one receiving option with 1,104 yards. His wide receiver tandem consisted of a 30-year-old Ted Ginn Jr. (739 receiving yards) and a 33-year-old Jerricho Cotchery (485 receiving yards), while not having the luxury of a 1,000-yard rusher.

While Newton may be "salty" about Hurts' offense, by many accounts, they've only gotten better, and Hurts should be able to continue the success he's had the past several years. With the return of Barkley, Smith, and Brown, the Eagles added a complementary piece of running back A.J. Dillon, wide receiver John Metchie III, and still have former first-round pick Jahan Dotson as their WR4.

Critics will get a chance to see if Hurts will have the opportunity to "carry the Eagles" in 2025 or if this exceptionally well built will continue their winning ways. The Eagles host the Cowboys in Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season.
