Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has cooled fears that William Saliba has suffered a serious injury, revealing the defender is struggling with a twisted ankle.

Saliba was forced to come off after just five minutes of Sunday’s defeat to Liverpool, with Cristhian Mosquera replacing him.

Arteta has explained that Saliba twisted his ankle in the warm-up, but he wanted to try and play the game.

The defender went down after challenging Liverpool striker Hugo Ekitike for a header and immediately signalled for treatment.

Saliba was unable to carry on and went down the tunnel for treatment, although he was able to sit on the bench in the second half and watch the rest of the game.

“He twisted his ankle during the warm-up, and he came in and he said he believed that he could carry on and play, but he strayed away in the first two actions,” said Arteta.
