Buffalo Bills reportedly lose young defensive tackle for season to Achilles injury

The Buffalo Bills have reportedly lost one of their young defensive tackles for the season.

On Sunday night, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that DeWayne Carter suffered a torn Achilles and would miss the 2025 season.

Carter, 24, was selected by the Bills in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft. As a rookie, Carter appeared in 11 games and recorded three starts for Buffalo. He recorded 14 total tackles (5 TFL) and three quarterback hits.

He likely would have taken on a larger role last season, but he suffered a wrist injury in Week 7 against the Tennessee Titans that required surgery. A stint on the injured reserve halted any momentum that Carter had built early in the season.

Carter had a quiet 2025 training camp and preseason, but once again made the team’s 53-man roster. Carter was projected to be the fifth defensive tackle in the team’s rotation behind Ed Oliver, DaQuan Jones, T.J. Sanders and Deone Walker. Buffalo’s 2025 draft picks, Sanders and Walker, will now take on larger roles while the Bills figure out what to do at the position.

Buffalo has two defensive tackles on their practice squad, Zion Logue and Jordan Phillips, who could ultimately be signed to their 53-man roster. Logue was signed off of the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad last season. He spent some time on the main roster as a rookie but was waived in early November and spent the remainder of his rookie season on Buffalo’s practice squad. Phillips, 32, was added to the Bills’ practice squad after a short stint on Buffalo’s 90-man roster.
