Drafted second overall by the Los Angeles Rams in 1983 out of SMU, Dickerson immediately shattered rookie records with 390 carries for 1,808 yards and 18 touchdowns, earning Offensive Rookie of the Year and leading the Rams to the playoffs.
Over four-plus seasons with the Rams, he set the single-season rushing record with 2,105 yards in 1984, winning Offensive Player of the Year and leading the league in rushing four times overall (1983, 1984, 1986, 1988). Dickerson’s prolific output included six Pro Bowls and consistent 1,000+ yard seasons.

Dickerson’s career totals stand at 2,996 rushes for 13,259 yards (4.4 average) and 90 rushing touchdowns, plus 281 receptions for 2,137 yards and six scores, making him the fastest to 10,000 rushing yards (91 games) and ranking ninth all-time in rushing upon retirement. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1999.
Dickerson’s standout attributes were his unique upright running posture, exceptional vision and long-striding speed (4.4 40-yard dash), allowing him to glide past defenders. At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, his height provided a high pad level that confounded tacklers.
