Drafted fourth overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1969 NFL Draft out of North Texas State, Joe Greene quickly established himself as a dominant defensive tackle, earning the nickname “Mean Joe” and anchoring the [“Steel Curtain”](https://bleacherreport.com/articles/399144-pittsburgh-steelers-the-steel-curtain) defense.

Over his entire 13-season career with the Steelers, Greene was pivotal in transforming a perennial loser into a dynasty, contributing to four Super Bowl wins (IX, X, XIII, XIV) in six years.

He won NFL Defensive Player of the Year twice (1972, 1974) and earned five First-team All-Pro selections. His standout 1974 season included leading the defense to hold opponents under 10 points per game in a nine-game streak, and in Super Bowl IX, he recorded an interception, forced fumble and recovery. Greene innovated tactics like the “stunt 4-3” to disrupt offenses.

Greene’s career totals include 77.5 sacks, 16 fumble recoveries and one interception across 181 games. He ranks among the Steelers’ all-time sack leaders and was a 10-time Pro Bowler.

Greene’s standout attributes were his ferocity, mobility and leadership, combining size (6-foot-4, 275 pounds) with quickness to penetrate gaps.

His playing style was hostile and disruptive: a relentless pursuer who intimidated with his temper and physical dominance, often kicking opponents or throwing blockers aside.

Retiring in 1981, Greene’s No. 75 was retired by the Steelers.
