Former Arsenal striker Paul Merson has expressed surprise that Arsenal didn’t pursue Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi, who is reportedly close to joining Liverpool in a £35 million deal.
According to Merson while on punditry duties for Sky Sports news, Guehi would have been an excellent replacement for William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes.
Merson praised Guehi’s professionalism, citing his recent performances, including a superb goal in Palace’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa.

“It blows my mind that it’s just Liverpool [that are interested],” Merson said. “He gets into everybody’s team in my opinion.”
Merson believes Guehi would have been a valuable addition to Arsenal, particularly given his experience and quality.
Guehi’s potential departure from Crystal Palace has raised concerns about the team’s chances of having a successful season.
Palace manager Oliver Glasner emphasised the importance of keeping Guehi, stating, “We have to keep him if we want to play a successful season.”

Glasner also mentioned that the decision to sell Guehi would ultimately depend on finding the right replacement.

Liverpool’s interest in Guehi comes as no surprise, given his impressive form and England international status.
However, Merson thinks the Reds might face selection challenges with Guehi’s potential arrival. “They’re good problems at the start, but they’re not in the end,” Merson noted. “You’ve got to keep everybody happy.”
