5 things you need to know about wonderkid Rio Ngumoha

Rio Ngumoha captured all the headlines when he netted the winning goal for Liverpool against Newcastle United last Monday – despite being just 17 years of age.

But who is this young man? He made it into our 11 best teenage world footballers gallery recently.

We’ve got five fun facts for you today about the Newham man – let’s begin.

1. Ngumoha has played for England at youth level

Ngumoha has been prolific for England at various youth levels – he has represented the Three Lions at U15, U16 and U17 level. In total, he has scored six goals for England’s youth teams.

2. He’s eligible for FOUR international teams

While Ngumoha has represented England at youth international level, they are one of just four countries he can represent at senior level.

Outside of England, he is also eligible to play for France, Nigeria and Guadeloupe through his family heritage.

3. He was excellent for Liverpool in pre-season

Those who have been watching closely will not have been surprised by Ngumoha’s instant impact.

During their pre-season tour, he scored two goals and notched up two assists for the Reds which of course he has carried into the Premier League campaign with his stunning striker against Newcastle in the needle match at St James Park.

4. His footballing heroes are a pair of Barcelona legends

Every young footballer has their heroes in the sport – for Ngumoha, his favourite players growing up were understood to be ex Barcelona icons Lionel Messi and Neymar.

5. He’s a former Chelsea academy player

Ngumoha might be Liverpool’s man now – but this was not always the case.

Previously, he spent eight years in Chelsea’s academy, joining the Blues when he was just eight years old. He left Chelsea in 2024, opting to join Liverpool instead.

Before his time in the Chelsea academy he was seriously courted by Arsenal who must be rueing the fact they let him get away.
