Detroit Lions announce 6 team-voted captains, featuring 1 new face

ALLEN PARK -- The Detroit Lions announced their six team captains, featuring five repeats and one new face joining the mix.

Their captains are quarterback Jared Goff, wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, offensive tackle Penei Sewell, linebacker Alex Anzalone, edge defender Aidan Hutchinson and linebacker/special teamer Grant Stuard.

Goff, St. Brown, Hutchinson, Sewell and Anzalone were all captains last season. Goff and Anzalone have been team-voted captains for all five seasons since Dan Campbell and Brad Holmes took over. This is the third straight year for Anzalone and Sewell, with Hutchinson’s second time getting this honor.

Stuard signed as a free agent with the Lions earlier this year. He has immediately left his mark on the special teams unit while doing a little bit of everything, while also returning kickoffs. Stuard could also see some defensive playing time in the first half of the season, with Malcolm Rodriguez still working his way back from an ACL injury.

With two new coordinators and a ton of new faces on the coaching staff, this list is a firm reminder that the team’s roster, especially the heart of it, remains in tact heading into a new season.

Goff is coming off a top-five MVP season after posting career highs in completion percentage (72.4%), passing touchdowns (37), passer rating (111.8) and QBR (68.4). St. Brown is coming off back-to-back first-team All-Pro appearances.

Sewell is considered one of the top building blocks across the entire NFL. The 24-year-old is already a three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro right tackle, and has taken ownership of his role as an on-field leader and pre-game speaker.

Anzalone is a five-time captain as voted by his teammates, speaking to his importance in that locker room. The linebacker enters the season in a contract year after a “weird” situation over the offseason while trying to get a new deal. But it’s clear his voice and presence still carries a ton of weight in Allen Park.

Hutchinson was on track to lead the NFL in just about every pass-rushing category before a broken tibia and fibula ended his third season early. He had 7.5 sacks and 45 pressures through parts of five games.
