Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin ruled out rookie defensive tackle Derrick Harmon with an MCL sprain for their Week 1 game against the New York Jets.
Harmon suffered the injury in the Steelers’ final preseason game. He was not expected to play in Week 1, but he could return sooner rather than later, and that is why he did not land on injured reserve.
After the interception by Steelers cornerback James Pierre, Harmon hit the ground and walked over the sideline and went into the blue medical tent, according to the broadcast. He later walked onto the cart and was taken to the locker room.
Later on in the game, Harmon came out of the Steelers’ locker room in street clothes and walked over to the team bench under his own power. That could be a positive sign.
Harmon has stood out this preseason and was expected to be the team‘s starting left defensive end. With Harmon now out for Week 1, the Steelers could look to make an external addition or roll with fellow rookie Yahya Black.
Harmon missed some time in training camp before the team’s first preseason game, but he battled through it. In the preseason, Harmon has showcased great power and has proven to be a difference maker.
In Indianapolis, Harmon stood at 6-foot-4, weighing in at 313 pounds. Harmon ran a 4.95 40-yard dash with a 1.74 10-yard split, both great numbers for his size.
