Eagles Bring Back Struggling Former First Round Pick

The Philadelphia Eagles had a quick change of heart when it came to offensive lineman Kenyon Green, bringing back the embattled former first round pick and placing him on the active roster just one week after giving him his walking papers.

“The Eagles cut guard Kenyon Green last week, but he wasn’t gone for long,” Pro Football Talk’s Michael David Smith wrote on September 1. “Green has re-signed to the Eagles’ active roster, the team announced.”

The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles open the NFL regular season on Thursday, September 4, at home against the Dallas Cowboys.

Bringing back Green seems to be the clearest indication the Eagles won’t have 3-time Pro Bowl offensive guard Landon Dickerson for the season opener. Dickerson underwent knee surgery in August and returned to practice last week only to miss Monday’s practice.

Brett Toth will likely start in Dickerson’s place if he can’t play against the Cowboys and took the reps with the first team offense on Monday.

Eagles Cut Green Following Offseason Trade

The Eagles released Green on August 25 after a disappointing preseason and training camp in which he never seriously threatened to crack the starting lineup.

“The#Eagles are waiving offensive linemanKenyon Green,” CBS Sports NFL reporter Matt Zenitz wrote on his official X account. “Was a first-round pick in 2022 and has made 23 career starts. Had been acquired in a trade with the Texans in March.”

Philadelphia paid a steep cost to bring in Green, the No. 15 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, sending the Houston Texans star safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson and a 2026 sixth round pick in exchange for Green and a 2026 fifth round pick on March 11.

The Eagles turned down the fifth year option on Green’s rookie contract on May 1, denying him what would have been a guaranteed $16.685 million payday in 2026.

“Green was acquired in March in a trade with the Texans that sent safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Houston.” Pro Football Talk’s Josh Alper wrote on May 1. “He missed the 2023 season with a shoulder injury and missed time with injury last season as well. He has started 23 games when healthy, but ended last season on the bench and that makes the Eagles’ decision a fairly unsurprising one.”

Rolling Dice With Green in Lineup

There’s an argument to be made that the Eagles take a risk every time they put Green on the field — one that could put star skill players like NFL All-Pro running back Saquon Barkley and Super Bowl MVP quarterback Jalen Hurts at unnecessary injury risk.

That’s not hyperbole. Green has just been that bad.

Green played 12 games for the Texans in 2024 with 9 starts, and when he was on the field was arguably the NFL’s worst offensive guard. Green’s 38.6 overall grade from Pro Football Focus put him 132nd out of 136 eligible players at his position.

“Kenyon Green another reminder that (offensive line coach) Jeff Stoutland can’t fix everyone!” Eagles reporter Jonny Page wrote on his official X account on August 26. “I saw huge issues in pass pro.”

“No one should be surprisedKenyon Green was released,” Eagles fan Tyler Cimarone wrote on X on August 25. “Man lol he was arguably the worst guard in all of football.”
