Seahawks release Damien Martinez amid practice squad moves

The Seattle Seahawks released rookie running back Damien Martinez on Tuesday amid some more practice squad shuffling.

Will this be the breakout year for Seahawks’ Byron Murphy II?

Seattle re-signed offensive guard Sataoa Laumea, defensive end Jalan Gaines and defensive tackle Anthony Campbell to their practice squad. All three players spent training camp with the Seahawks and were signed to the team’s initial 17-player practice squad last week before being released to make room for other players.

To clear space for Tuesday’s practice squad additions, Seattle released Martinez, offensive tackle Amari Kight and cornerback Shemar Jean-Charles.

Martinez, a seventh-round draft pick, is the most notable release. The 217-pound Martinez rushed for a combined 3,169 yards over his standout three-year college career at Oregon State and Miami, but was beaten out by George Holani for the Seahawks’ third running back spot.

Seattle also signed safety D’Anthony Bell to its practice squad on Monday. Bell made the team’s initial 53-man roster last week, but was then waived to make room for the Seahawks to sign linebacker Chazz Surratt.
